Curfew relaxed in Mau for first time
Lucknow/mau | October 24, 2005 9:46:15 PM IST

Curfew was relaxed in a phased manner in the riot-torn Mau district of Uttar Pradesh for the first time today.

While women and children were being allowed to move out of their houses to buy essentials for the past five days, curfew was formally relaxed twice for two hours each beginning this morning, official sources in Mau said.

The curfew was relaxed at 1000 hrs and later at 1400 hrs to enable people to get medical aid and buy essentials.

Curfew, however, was relaxed fully in Nizamuddinpura and Domanpura areas, sources added.

Meanwhile, the government has formed five committees to assess damage to private and business properties during the riot.

Compensation would be granted after the teams submit their report.

The state government has sent six teams of doctors to provide medical assistance to the residents of riot-torn district even as thousands of kg of vegetables, flour, rice and dry ration has so far been distributed, sources in the state capital said.

District administration officials went door-to-door to distribute over 3,000 LPG cylinders to residents, sources added.
